Interstate car transport, explained
What it actually costs to move a car between states, how long each run really takes, and the handful of decisions that change the price. Written for Sydney owners sending a car interstate for the first time.
Why there's no single price
Interstate car transport isn't a fixed fare, and any operator who quotes one before knowing the car and the route is guessing. The price is built from a few honest variables, and once you understand them you can read a quote properly instead of just hoping it's fair.

How long each run actually takes
Transit time is more predictable than price. These are realistic windows for a dedicated or shared prestige move, not worst-case depot timelines:

When enclosed is worth it interstate
On a short metro move, open transport on a low-angle tray is usually the right call. Interstate changes the maths. A run to Melbourne or Brisbane is hours of highway behind trucks throwing grit, and a run to Perth is the better part of a week exposed. The longer the distance, the more the enclosed barrier earns its premium — which is why a fair share of enclosed bookings are interstate. If the car is a concours piece, has original or irreplaceable paint, or simply shouldn't be seen in transit, enclosed is the answer the moment real distance is involved. Not sure? Preparing a car for a long haul
- Quarter tank of fuel, no more. Enough to load and unload, not enough to add weight for no reason.
- Note existing marks. We photograph the car before it loads and again at delivery, but your own record never hurts.
- Remove valuables and loose items. Nothing should be rolling around inside for two days.
- Disable the alarm, or tell us the routine. A car that arms itself mid-transit is nobody's friend.
- Tell us how it sits. Ride height, a front lift, a kill switch — the details that mean the right setup turns up first time.

How much does it cost to transport a car interstate?
There's no single price — it's built from distance, whether you choose open or enclosed, the car itself, door-to-door versus depot, and how flexible your dates are. The honest answer is a written quote for your specific car and route, given before anything moves, rather than a number invented on the spot.
How long does it take to transport a car from Sydney to Melbourne?
Typically one to two days for a prestige move, depending on the load schedule and exactly where each address sits. Sydney to Brisbane is similar, Adelaide is two to three days, and Perth is the longer haul at around five to seven days.
Is enclosed transport worth it for an interstate move?
More often than for a local one. Interstate means hours or days of highway exposure to stone chips and weather, so the enclosed barrier earns its premium far more on a Sydney to Melbourne or Perth run than on a trip across town. For concours, original-paint or high-value cars, it's the right call once real distance is involved.
Do you transport non-running cars interstate?
Yes. Non-runners are winched gently with wheel dollies where needed and secured for the distance. Tell us it's a non-runner when you book so the right gear comes on the day.
Do you collect and deliver to my door interstate?
Yes, door to door is available on every route, and it's what most prestige owners choose so the car isn't driven around at either end. Depot-to-depot is an option too if you'd rather keep the cost down.
