How to transport a lowered car without damage
Why standard tow trucks scrape lowered cars, the questions that expose an unprepared operator, and what a proper low-car load actually looks like.
The geometry problem nobody explains.
A tilt tray loads a car by tilting its deck into a ramp. The angle between that ramp and the ground is the approach angle, and it's the whole game: if the angle is steeper than your car's front overhang can clear, the splitter, lip or sump touches down before the wheels climb. A standard tray runs an approach angle that a static-dropped car simply cannot survive. This is why "we tow anything, mate" so often ends in fibreglass on the road.
The fixes are mechanical, not heroic: longer trays tilted shallower, race ramps that split one steep angle into two gentle ones, and boards that raise the car's line of travel. An operator set up for low cars carries all three and decides which to use after looking at your car, not after hearing it scrape.
Five questions that expose an unprepared operator
- "What's your tray's approach angle with ramps?": anyone doing this work knows the number
- "Where do your straps attach?": the only right answer is wheels/tyres, never the chassis or control arms of a lowered car
- "Have you loaded a static car this low before?": ask for specifics, listen for hedging
- "What happens if it can't clear?": the right answer involves stopping, not pushing on
- "Can I send photos first?": a professional wants them; a cowboy says don't worry about it
Owner's prep checklist
If you're on air-ride, get to max lift before the truck arrives, and say so at booking if the compressor is dead, because that changes the plan. Fold mirrors, note your car's lowest point (and what it is: lip? exhaust? sump?), send photos of the front from ground level, and mention body kit extensions the driver can't see from above. Sixty seconds of information at booking prevents the entire genre of low-car horror stories.

How low is too low for a tilt tray?
For a standard tray, anything much under 100mm gets risky. The figure that actually decides it is the approach angle: our trays lay down to 4 degrees, shallow enough that a slammed car climbs without touching. The equipment, not the car, is the limit.
Should a lowered car be strapped by the wheels or the chassis?
Wheels. Strapping the chassis or suspension of a lowered car loads components that were never meant to take tie-down force, and on air-ride it can hold the body down while the suspension cycles. Soft straps through the wheels avoid all of it.
What should I tell the operator when I book?
The car's lowest point and rough clearance, whether it runs and rolls, whether it's static or bagged (and if bagged, whether it can lift), and photos of the front from ground level. That's enough for a professional to arrive with the right setup.
